The yukata is nowadays a lighter, easily recognizable summer kimono with slightly shorter sleeves. It was originally worn as a bathrobe and frequently seen around onsen, the Japanese hot springs. Its bathing symbolism was gradually lost and it was seen less and less until a few decades ago. Its recent resurgence as a summer kimono has allowed the Yukata to have a second youth and to be a common garment to see during the matsuris (traditional Japanese festivals) in summer.
