Modern revision of a traditional Japanese pants

Modern vision of the traditional Hakama Pants

These pants are a revisited version of the Hakama. Hakama are wide pants traditionally worn by the nobles of medieval Japan, especially the samurais. In order for them to be worn in everyday life, some aspects had to be put aside for the benefit of others: the rigid backsplash was for example replaced so that the pants could be one size fits all. Indeed Hakama were custom-made, that’s why such features could exist. The spirit has been respected as much as possible, the refinement and the robustness were what characterized these pants during the Edo period (and all the areas of medieval Japan), and we brought a particular care to it.

Highly resistant materials

As written just above, the traditional Hakama was used by the samurais, so it had to show extreme resistance and a rare versatility. We put a lot of emphasis on making these pants as strong as the origins from which they were inspired. The fabric is thick, doesn’t tear at the first wash and allows comfort no matter what the weather is like: it is thick enough to not let you get cold and the pants are loose enough to let you breathe and not suffocate you with heat. The seams are as resistant as the fabric so that these pants will last you in time and let you rely on them like a samurai relied on his Hakama.

Deeply rooted in Japanese culture

Japanese nobles adopted this garment under the influence of the Chinese imperial court in the sixth century. Japanese hakama are traditionally worn over a kimono, tied at the waist and falling to the ankles. From the fifteenth century onwards, they were only worn by men, because from about the twelfth century until the end of the Edo period, samurai dress included a hakama. Nevertheless they are nowadays worn by men and women without distinction. These pants are very anchored in Japanese culture because they are still used in their original form in several martial arts: aikido or kendo to mention only the most known.
