The Japanese dragon is a serpentine creature that does not have wings, unlike the Western dragon. It is a symbol of strength and power and is therefore respected and honored in Japan. Buddhism (as well as Shintoism) have had a great influence (and still have) on Japan through the ages. The dragon has thus helped Japan for centuries as a symbol of power, wisdom and longevity. Bushido (samurai code of honor) has been greatly influenced by religion and consequently its most respected representative: the dragon. Japanese piety is found in everything the Japanese do, you have to see it to believe it.
